Worlds first commercial 2nd-generation bioethanol plant opens July 10, 2007 |

An American bioethanol company has announced plans to build a brand new ‘second-generation’ bioethanol plant in the US, which could produce over 1 billion gallons of bioethanol a year entirely from waste wood matter.

Range Fuels Inc. which is based in the state of Georgia, is at the forefront of cellulosic ethanol technology, allowing the company to make fuel from otherwise useless products such as wood chips, agricultural waste, grasses, cornstalks, hog manure, municipal waste, sawdust and paper pulp.

"The state of Georgia has provided us with an excellent opportunity to use its abundant renewable natural resources to help solve fuel issues for the country," said Mitch Mandich, Chief Executive Officer of Range Fuels. "Thanks to Georgia’s environmentally sensitive stewardship of its forests for the past 50 years, Range Fuels can take what is traditionally considered a waste product, and turn it into a source of transportation fuel."

Although so-called 2nd-generation technology, which will see bioethanol being produced from by-products of crops that are already being grown for other applications and from waste material, is being researched around the world, this factory will be the first commercial operation to operate. Until now, high costs have prevented 2nd-generation technology being used on the mass market.
